May Telmissany was born in Egypt in 1965, and moved to Paris in 1990. In 1991, she began publishing stories in French literary magazines, and in 1995, completed an MA in French literature (on Proust). She translated a number of academic works from French into Arabic, and spent several years as a working for the French service at Radio Cairo. She is currently an assistant professor in Modern Languages at the University of Ottawa. She has written widely on Egyptian cinema, following a Ph.D. on the topic of hara (neighbourhoods) in Egyptian cinema at the University of Montréal.
She published two volumes of short stories through the Culture Palace in Cairo, entitled Repetitive Sculptures and Mental Betrayals, and she is also the author of two novels, Dunyazad (which has been translated into French and English) and Heliopolis.
