Historically, Arab historians and travelers marked the fame and outstanding bravery of the Qatari poet Qatari Ibn al-Fujaah. Qatar inherited a Bedouin culture, and its influence is still evident in Qatari society. Because they were nomads, the Bedouin developed a culture based on oral poetry, song and dance, rather than on buildings and fine art.

Theatre has been the major literary form in Qatar since 1952. All productions are supported by the Culture and Arts Department. Abdel Rahman al-Mannai is a Qatari playwright and the author of Umm Zinn (The Most Beautiful), a play in the Qatari dialect. He has also translated several English plays into the Qatari dialect.

The mass media in Qatar has been witnessing an unprecedented shift in line with the freedom of expression. The directive of lifting censorship of the media and abolishing the Ministry of Information, whose departments were transformed into independent bodies was one of the most important steps taken by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani the Emir after taking power on 27 June 1995. In May 1997 Qatar General Broadcasting and Television Corporation was set up.
